On Saturday 9th July 2011 at King George V field outside the Chiltern Pools in Amersham, the Amersham Round Table joined forces with the Amersham & District British Legion for the 'Carnival of Heroes'.

The annual Carnival was organised by Amersham Round Table and attracted visitors of all ages, who were kept entertained by the Amersham Band, St George's School Country Dancers, the British Institute for Martial Arts, the Revelation Majorettes and the Chesham All Girls Band.

Chairman of the Amersham Round Table, Paul Gardener said, "Our Carnival is a great day out for the whole community. This year is the 90th anniversary of the British Legion's Poppy Appeal, and we were delighted to work with them".

"The day itself is a wonderful opportunity for local charities to spread the word about the work they do, recruit new volunteers and of course raise much needed funds", continued Paul. "The Carnival is one of Amersham Round Table's key fundraising events to help our local community.  If any local group needs help, whether it's financial or us giving our time, get in touch with me at."

The Carnival began with the crowning of the princesses, Amy Hyde and sisters Daisy and Milly MacCormack. The girls were crowned by Mayor Mimi Harker, who incidently started the Carnival Princess competition 10 years ago when she was a member of Amersham Ladies Circle, the sister group of Round Table.

The Procession soon got underway, led by the princesses, with the Little Dragons float winning the float competition. Princess, 9 year old Amy Hyde, said "I had a wonderful day as Carnival Princess. It was a lot of fun and I will frame my Carnival Princess sash to remind me of the lovely day."

Also joining the parade were three Chelsea Pensioners. "Seeing these incredibly old men, dressed in their finery with their medals, I felt very humbled to be in their company", commented Andrew Seymour, Amersham Round Table Vice Chairman, and Leader of the Amersham & District Branch of the British Legion. "We owe so much to the brave men and women who fought for our country. I hope that the public will get behind the 90th anniversary and continue to support the work that the British Legion does", said Andrew.

If anyone would like to donate to the appeal, please contact Andrew on 07846 135881.
