On Saturday 4th February Amersham A team swam at Maidenhead in the second round of the Thames Valley League. Despite the weather forecast and the snow beginning to fall there was a full house at the Magnet pool in anticipation of another exciting swimming league battle
With Amersham having beaten Maidenhead Marlins in the first round it looked like the home team may have stepped up a gear for the re-match, with the Marlins taking the first two medley relays, if only by the length of the 12 year olds finger nails. Newcomers Abingdon Vale took event 3 the 10 year old girls, but after that it was Amersham who were in control and with only 7 results falling out of the first or second spot for the whole evening the points were mounting up.
There were some close finishes and impressive swims and it was great to see the younger swimmers looking so strong, the 9 year olds were victorious in all four of their relay races so Amersham may be topping the tables for a few years to come.
After all 43 events the final results were, Amersham A first (225) Maidenhead Marlins second (204), Abingdon Vale third (167), Reading fourth (122), Wycombe fifth (116) and Slough & Eton sixth (57)
Results included first place in 13 out of 19 team relay races and individual first places for:
Amy Hollingsworth (10) 50m Fly
Magdalena Rospedzihowska (10) 50m Free
James Bell (10) 50m Back and 50m Free
Georgina Bradley (11) 50m Breast
Rosie Whittaker (11) 50m Free and 50m Back
Oliver Hardman (11) 50m Free
Thanya Jasinska (12) 50m Free
Zac Bishoff (12) 50m Free
In the other Gala on the night there were only 5 teams as Amersham B were unable to field enough swimmers to compete. Winners were Newbury but only just! The top three clubs being separated by a mere 7 points. Windsor took second and Bracknell & Wokingham were pushed into third. With Chesham and Chalfont Otters left behind.
Results were Newbury first (164), Windsor second (161), Bracknell & Wokingham third (157), Chesham fourth (100), Chalfont Otters fifth (48)
Two wins puts Amersham at the top of the league table. The third and final round will to be swum on Saturday 3rd March 2012. With the top half of the league table swimming in the League Final at Maidenhead and the others in the B Gala at Amersham.
Congratulations to all the swimmers and thanks to the coaches and officials who were with them on the night, and all who then had to struggle through the snow to get home.
Full results will be posted on the AmershamSC website
