Amersham Town Council and the Amersham Action group, together with the Nexus Community Gym and the Chiltern District Council are holding a free event on Saturday the 23rd July to mark one year until the 2012 London Olympics.

The'Get Set, Ready, Go!' event will be held at the King George V Field outside the Chiltern Pools leisure centre in Amersham from 1-4pm. The event aims to get people of all ages to try their hand at a wide range of Olympic sports from archery to swimming.

There will be equipment and coaches on hand to assist local people in trying out sports, and there will also be representatives of local sports clubs in attendance with information about joining if participants find a sport they want to do on a regular basis.

Councillor Mimi Harker, Chiltern's Cabinet Member for community and sport development said "This day will be an opportunity to drop in and try your hand at Olympic sports and celebrate in true Olympic spirit with your family and friends. Throughout the day we are also raising funds for the AdiZone project which we are hoping to bring to Amersham. Adizones are youth focused multi-purpose outdoor fitness facilities, with a large outdoor gym, basketball and football area, climbing wall, tennis wall and a freestyle area for aerobics, dance, yoga and martial arts. Having one of these in Amersham will be fantastic and give schools, clubs, activity providers and residents a place to get active."

So come down and try your hand at archery, swimming, diving, gymnastics, football, volleyball, judo, taekwondo, athletics, cycling and rowing!

Is there a sport you've always wanted to try that you'll give a go at the event? Do you know of any unusual sports clubc in the area that you could recommend? Post your comments below.
